Fifth graders visit Keyhole

The Hulett fifth grade class participated in a canoeing field trip hosted by WY Game and Fish Wardens Mitchell Kern and Andy Enscore and Keyhole State Park the last week of April.

To start out the day, the students were given a crash course in basic canoe navigating and safety. After that, they learned how to properly fit and adjust a life jacket on themselves.

With their newfound knowledge and fitted life vest on, they assisted the wardens with unloading the canoes from the trailer; each student then found a paddle and a partner. Finally, it was time to hit the water!

The remainder of the morning was spent in a protected cove practicing their newfound navigational skills and learning how valuable good communication is when a part of a team. After a lakeside picnic lunch, the students teamed up again to have some friendly competition racing their canoes out to a buoy and back to shore; the only prizes awarded were bragging rights.

The following piece was written by fifth grader Cedar Palm, and serves as a reflection for all that attended:

"We were so excited that morning when we arrived at school that we couldn't stop talking about the field trip we were going on. When we arrived at Keyhole, we couldn't help thinking this was the best field trip we would ever go on.

"Our minds filled up with ideas of what we could do and stories we could tell. When we got in the canoes some of us were nervous, while others were pumping with excitement.

"We got our life-jackets on and made sure they fit. Then, we got our equipment ready. We got into the canoes and started out into the water.

"We paddled for hours, and we are all extremely grateful that Game and Fish came out and taught us to canoe. Without them this field trip would have never been possible."
