Proudly Serving the Hulet and Devils Tower Community

OWITS more than a turkey shoot

The annual Old West Invitational Turkey Shoot was held last week, May 5 through 7 at the GHCC. The event kicked off with a music event at the Devils Tower golf club sponsored by the Country Outdoors concert series.

Thursday night was the calcutta and Friday morning kicked off the hunt. The first hunter to come in was youth Hunter Aiden Williams of Hulett and his guide Calvin Wolf.

Hunters came in slowly throughout the day, perhaps due to the warm weather.

Friday evening events included supper, live auction and silent auction. During the evening, Craig Showalter, who has been a major player in the success of the turkey shoot, received a belt buckle for his retirement.

Craig is retiring as the president and CEO of the Wyoming community foundation.

Also during the evening, a very special addition to the turkey shoot was announced by GHCC president Bobbi Butler. Deb Bears announced the starting of a very special scholarship.

In January 2022, a long-time friend, supporter and photographer of the turkey shoot passed away. Lloyd Pruet was honored at the turkey shoot and one of his last paintings that he signed was donated by his wife Jan and framed by Luke McDonald and auctioned off to start the scholarship. Around $10,000 was raised.

Special guest veterans were announced: Jace Badia, Colonel Mark Wilkins, and Joshua Didier. Special guests were Ray Fulcher, Adam Hood, Jared Mullins, Robert Cann and Zach and Mary Phillips with the Country Outdoors.

On Saturday hunters were out hunting in the morning and at 1 p.m. a lunch and awards ceremony was held. This year the event appeared be one of the biggest ever held and all the preparations, planning and hard work paid off and hunters who came from all over enjoyed themselves hunting and supporting a great cause.
